Details: This
bonnet dates to the pre Civil War era 1850’s. The bonnet is made upon a
stiffened base of a rich yet thin silk which has an almost faille striping to it
but feels to be silk taffeta. The bonnet is boned with very narrow rounds of
wood boning in groupings of two and three with a silk finely ruched around
each.
A pleated ruffle folds partially around the
wide wired brim at its front. Its bottom has a ruched ruffle modesty piece and
its purple and green striped ties which appear to be original have breaks and
are in need of replacement. The flaws to this piece are extremely minor. There
is a minor fraying to the interior back neckline, located inside the bonnet. The
bonnet has six pinhead points on the silk and a slight pinhead of wear to the
brim but its condition is definitely museum.
Measures 12 inches in its height and 7 ½
inches in its depth. A superb piece to make a most impressive addition to an
early hat collection.
